You’ve likely seen a legal pad. These are writing pads with a vertical line 1.25 inches or more from the left side of the paper. They can be utilized in the office, at school, at home or anywhere paper is needed. Legal notepads come in a variety of styles, types and colors to suit your needs. Use ruled legal pads to write notes, prepare drafts or compile lists for project tasks, school coursework or personal compositions.
Why Choose Legal Notepads?
As with standard composition notebooks, the defining characteristic of legal pads is their ruled lines that run horizontally across the page in evenly spaced rows. Some of the more common features that legal notepads include are:
- Portable size, making them easy to carry them in briefcases, backpacks or purses
- Perforated top, allowing you to cleanly tear away each sheet
- Some versions have chipboard backing, letting legal notepads double as a surface to write on
- Some types of writing pads have ruled divisions by category legend, such as writer and date, upcoming tasks, comments and numbers lists. Other types have three pre-punched holes for inserting sheets into binders, or covers to protect the pad.
What Should You Look at When Buying Legal Pads?
Consider the following when you shop for legal pads.
Color Family
White and yellow legal pads are the predominant color choices, though some manufacturers offer special varieties of pastel writing paper as well. Specialty options include colors such as canary, ivory, pink, pastel blue and green, and orchid.
Dimensions
Legal notepad sheet dimensions vary from standard letter paper (8.5 inches by 11 inches) to legal paper (8.5 inches by 14 inches) and more. Choose the dimensions you need to fit your notepad into any backpack or travel suitcase.
Rule Type
Narrow-ruled paper contains more lines per sheet than wide-ruled. Wide-ruled provides much more handwriting room, which is ideal for school-age kids or those who tend to write larger. Both white and yellow legal pads are available in each ruled format.
There are four types of ruling available for legal notepads:
- Wide-ruled (or legal ruled): 11/32-inch spacing
- Narrow-ruled: 1/4-inch spacing
- College-ruled: 9/32-inch spacing
- Cornell-ruled: a specific type of note-taking system with sections
