Basic scanners include flatbed and desktop models. HP offers both types, each with industry-leading features that offices need to organize hard copy documents into files for space-saving efficiency. HP flatbed scanners operate with open-top manual feeds or with 50 to 100-sheet auto feed beds. Desktop units have one-pass auto feed beds that accommodate from 50 to 80 pages. Both are capable of duplex scanning. Auto feed in both device types accepts paper banners, cut sheets, and pre-punched documents, as well as envelopes, labels, and card media. Flatbeds accept books, ledgers, and other bound documents under open tops. HP also provides machines as part of its multifunction HP printer, copier, and scanner all-in-one models, with capabilities similar to those of the brand's dedicated optical character recognition (OCR) readers.
HP desktop and HP flatbed scanner resolution and scan speed
HP desktop scanners have 24-bit external and 48-bit internal depths, with an 8-bit grayscale of 256 levels. They have an output resolution of up to 600 dpi, and can scan between 35 and 75 pages a minute (between 70 and 150 inches a minute). The flatbeds have a 24-bit overall depth, also with an 8-bit grayscale and with sharper resolutions of up to 1200 dpi. They scan at speeds ranging from 50 to 100 ppm (between 60 and 120 ipm). Both devices transfer color photos into files in about 7 seconds.
Manipulating documents with HP scanners
Preparing scanned files for printers when creating presentation-ready documents sometimes requires adjusting their appearance. Both scanner HP desktops and flatbeds have several advanced features for fine-tuning files for printing, including auto color detect, auto crop, auto-expose, and auto orientation. Manual digitization includes edge and background cleanup, de-skewing, and punch hole removal.
Each machine also offers different file management options, including scan to email, scan to cloud storage, and scan to USB. Many create searchable PDF files, as well as files compatible with Word, WordPerfect®, PowerPoint™, and Excel™, and include JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, RTF, and OPF file extensions.
